Why It Matters

Why is loneliness considered a serious health problem?

The chaRIZZma Team4 min read

Loneliness is a health problem because chronic social disconnection carries a mortality risk the U.S. Surgeon General compared to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. The 2023 advisory names social connection as a protective factor for both mental and physical health.

Connection is not a luxury

We treat social skills as a nice-to-have. The evidence treats them as load-bearing. Disconnection raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, and early death. Building the ability to start and hold conversations is, in that light, a health behavior.

The skill gap behind the epidemic

A lot of loneliness is not a lack of desire to connect. It is a lack of reps. People want connection but freeze at the doorway: the opener, the cold approach, the moment that matters. Closing that skill gap is a tractable, practiceable problem, even when the loneliness behind it feels enormous.
